Families of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who died fighting the Yarnell Hill wildfire will benefit from an all-day fundraiser Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 541 in Prescott. Doors open at 10 a.m. and stay open until 7 or 8 p.m. Yarnell resident and musician Denise Roggio, who wrote “Blazing Honor” in tribute to the Hotshots, will debut her newest song, “Yarnell Rising,” during her performance that will close the event. The community of Yarnell lost scores of structures during the fire, and Roggio’s new song – an upbeat country rock melody – is meant to inspire residents, she said. Roggio said she composes her music in her head when she walks or jogs in the mornings. As she ran one recent morning, the lyrics for “Yarnell Rising” began to come to her, she said. Its chorus illustrates her vision: “We are rising from the ashes. Wildfires can’t drag us away. We are bruised but we’re not broken. Home sweet home is where we want to be. Yarnell, Arizona’s home for me.” Other highlights on Saturday include hamburgers or brats with Louisiana-style cowboy beans and chips for $5, as well as a half-and-half drawing for raffle prizes, such as tickets for a 2014 Diamondbacks game, restaurant gift cards, an autographed Phoenix Suns basketball and an outdoor fire pit. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the 100 Club of Arizona to help Hotshots families. For more information, call Kelly at… |
